International and Domestic Students Come Together
‘A-ha! Global Learning Community’

By Lee Ji-woo, Student Editor

Many students probably have heard of ‘A-ha! Learning Community’ operated by the Education Development Research Institute (EDRI) at Chonnam National University (CNU). Its various programs include ‘Gong-bu-il-chon’ and ‘Han-wool Studying’. However, many CNUians still confuse the ‘A-ha! Global Learning Community’ with other programs like the ‘Buddy-Buddy’ program. The A-ha! Global Learning Community is designed to promote and increase mutual understanding between international and Korean students and to help internationalize education at CNU. The program has two specific courses: ‘Global Gong-bu-il-chon’ (G1) and ‘Global Han-wool Learning’ (G2); G1 is for a learning community of more than three students with at least one foreign student in the group.  G2 is for a community that consists of one ‘Iggumi’ student and more than three ‘Ddarmi’ ones. The ‘Iggumi’ is the leader and must have a lot of knowledge about the subject and the ‘Ddarmi’ are students that want help to understand the subject.  Korean and foreign students can apply for both Iggumi and Ddarmi depending on their needs or qualifications.
The members of one of the excellent teams last year

The ‘A-ha! Global Learning Community’ started last year and its third program began in April. In total, 76 teams were selected for this session and applications are increasing. Park Are-neung (Junior, Dept. of Korean Literature & Language) who was a member of one of the excellent teams last year said, “At first, I did not know much about  the international students at CNU even though I had a few in my class. But after this program, I could understand them more.“

To qualify, ‘Iggumi’ students must have an A in their major course or certain high scores in official foreign language test such as TOEIC and TOEFL. Also students can apply to this program if they have a recommendation from their advisor. There are no qualifications to be a ‘Ddarmi’ so any student who wants to join the program can apply for this online. The EDRI provides some financial support to participants and they will receive a certificate from the EDRI if they finish their work and act according to the rules. If you would like more detailed information and apply for this program, you can visit the Internet homepage of the EDRI or contact them by phone at 530-2333.
